Since my daughter is a casting director for Broadway Shows, my wife and I get to New York for shows very frequently. I believe that at Thanksgiving we had see all but four of the shows on Broadway. Since everyone seems to be getting their two cents in on reviews of Broadway Musicals, I thought I would put in my two cents. Here are my top 20 all time favorites on Broadway with my mini-reviews:
Phantom of the Opera - what can I say - the quintessential musical - have seen five times including New York and London. Great Music - great story - great show
Wicked - Only four times - Avenue Q should never has snuck (sneaked) past Wicked as Best Musical - this is a classic
Les Miz - Current show on Broadway is a reasonable facsimile - and well worth seeing, but the earlier shows have featured incredible performers - just watched the DVD performance with the Royal Philharmonic - well worth the purchase.
She Loves me - This is one of the best, and not well known. I am ready for a Broadway Revival
Mame - Angela Landsbury and Beatrice Arthur can never be equaled. What a great show.
Jersey Boys - Great Music - Great Biography - You'll be sorry if you miss this one on Broadway. See it now.
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas - This will be an annual Christmas event. Cute show - kids love it, and with a good Grinch this show appeals to all ages. You've already missed it this season. Actually beat out Wicked for weekly gross for the 2006 Christmas season (OK - three shows a day helps).
Twenty fifth Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee - Darling show - have seen three times.
Aspects of Love - Not a popular ALW show, but one of my favorites. "Love Changes Everything" is one of the best Broadway songs ever.
Coast of Utopia - Have only seen part one - but back to NY in March to see 2 and 3. What a show. Acting, sets, story. Do not miss it.
Godspell - So many ways to do this show - great songs - great story.
Producers - Classic
Cats - OK its been around a long time - but I still love it.
Grey Gardens - Probably should be higher on the list. If "Drowsy Chaperone" beats out Grey Gardens for best musical, I will be upset.
Fiddler on the Roof - Classic
Damn Yankees - I think Bebe Neuwirth was better than Gwen Verdon.
Doubt - What a play. I was truly in doubt at the end.
Company - Will win Tony for best revival. Probably should be higher on my list. The use of instruments is FAR better than in Sweeney Todd.
West Side Story - Hey - has to be in the top 20.
Kiss Me Kate - Fun musical.
Spring Awakening - Bold new show this season. I was afraid it would not get the recognition it deserved, but it DID.
Guys and Dolls - Classic.
Oh well, you've heard it all before, but thanks for listening.
